Maybe you're thinking about an English language training program for your company but can't be sure when to move forward with it. That's understandable. You can start gathering the information you need now. Here's how to do it.

A) Start with a phone call. Would you like answers to questions before taking the time to schedule a no-cost consultation? Call 617.785.4294 or 781.438.3368. If PRO ESL is not able to answer your call, just leave a message and PRO ESL will return your call as soon as possible.

B) Next, schedule a no-cost onsite consultation in order to gather more information about an English
language training program. The schedule for a no-cost consultation can take the form you want. Here's a suggested format, though this can be changed to meet your needs.

Language Training Consultation Questions Answered Onsite No Cost
1) Initial meeting with human resources, training director, or management - questions answered - twenty to thirty minutes
2) Meetings with employees who are to participate in the training courses - fifteen to twenty minutes each meeting
3) Meetings with managers, supervisors, and work colleagues - fifteen to twenty minutes each meeting
4) Consultation results, provided onsite or documented
> General skills assessment for language training
> General content focus for each training course
> Training schedule recommendation per week
> Recommendations for individual, pair, or group placement according to individual skills,
expectations for the training, and areas of focus

C) Learning and Coaching Forums - Schedule a learning and coaching forum. This is a great way to observe onsite English language training in action: Learning and Coaching Forums.

Learning and coaching forums are one-hour to two-hour interactive sessions in which your company's employees are able to receive suggestions, tips, and pointers for improving their English communication skills.

English Learning and Coaching Forum Segments: 1) open discussion topics on
communication skills 2) structured presentation and communication practice 3) a question-answer session and key points summary

D) The learning and coaching forums are a great introduction to onsite English language training. Are
you ready to move forward? The next step is to schedule an appointment for a needs analysis and evaluation intake. This is the three-step process for onsite custom English language training courses.

Needs Analysis and Evaluation Intake
> Course participant level and skills evaluation
> Course participant language needs analysis
> Management and colleague needs analysis

E) Having completed the three-step process, we are ready to schedule English language training at your company. PRO ESL takes action with the four components for developing custom English language training courses.

Learning and Coaching Forums - English at Work

Learning and coaching forums are one to two hours. There are three segments to learning and coaching forums:

1) Open discussion topics on communication skills

The forum presenter engages the forum participants in a brief discussion by asking them to speak about how they use English at work. All learning and coaching forums are customized. However, this part of learning and coaching forums can be enhanced by providing information about professional and workplace language at your company which enable the pesenter to more efficiently focus the forum on the language needs of the forum participants.  The forum presenter speaks about different situations at work in which ESL speakers could be presented with a communication challenge, which functions as a segue to the second part of the learning and coaching forum.
  • Meetings
  • Speaking to clients and customers
  • Presentations
  • Leading Meetings
  • Professional Business Writing
  • Internal Communication - speaking to professional colleagues at work
  • External Communication - speaking to professional colleagues and business associates
  • Speaking to managers and supervisors
  • Telephone English
2) Sructured presentation, communication practice, rolepays, and workplace dialog

This is an English language lesson that combines two or more of the following: presentation, communication practice,  dialogs, and roleplays. The presenter provides forum participants with pointers, tips, and suggestions on how to improve their English communication skills for work. Forum participants are encouraged to take notes.

3) Question-answer session - Key points summary

Forum participants are invited to ask questions about English communication skills and any part of the learning and coaching forum. As well, forum participants may questions about pronunciation, accent, grammar, and vocabulary. The presenter finishes the program by summarizing the key points of the learning and coaching forum.

Onsite English language training - five reasons

Onsite English language training and coaching

Are you a manager, a human resources director, or a training director looking for an English language course for your international employees? Have you sent any of your ESL speakers to courses off-site? If so, how did it go? Were your employees able to attend all the classes? Did any of the language have to do with what they have to say or write at work? Were they satisfied with the course? If you cannot say yes to these questions, then here are five reasons you should consider onsite English courses for your international employees.

1) Attendance and Convenience: People miss classes. It happens. We get busy, and we have lives outside of work. With onsite English classes, it's convenient for your employees to attend classes. There's no excuse for not showing up; the classes are at their workplace.

2) Specific Language Needs: Your employees may need to improve their English communication skills for work and business, but they can't enrol in just any course for that. With onsite workplace English courses, they'll participate in a
customized English language program made for their specific purposes. A custom onsite course focuses on their specific needs as ESL speakers and their work language: English for Professionals; Business English; Workplace English.

3) Effectiveness: Custom onsite English courses provide a focused language training experience that goes straight to the heart of what the course participants need: improved English language communication skills for their work. English language training is more effective when the course participants can work with the specific language of their professions, business, and work.

4) Content Quality Input: With onsite custom English courses, you'll be able to receive updates on the course from the  provider. You'll be able make known at any time what language content you think the course should include. After all, you should know. It's your workplace, and they're your employees.

5) Assurance: Because the course is taking place at your company, you can observe an English language training class anytime you want. Walk into a training session anytime - unannounced. You can be sure that the course is proceeding and progressing as you know it should.

All in all, off-site English language training cannot do for your company what onsite English language training can do. Onsite English language programs are in the cards.

    English ESL Course Components

    Boston Business English Classes
    English Course and Lesson Development

    A) Course concept for onsite English language training and communication coaching

A course concept means understanding the course participants and what they need to focus on. We develop a course concept with a preliminary assessment. The course concept is non-linear and allows for a flexible, focused, and rich learning experience.

    B) Course outline

A course outline is simply a list of what we will cover during the training. The course outline is developed from the preliminary assesment, which is the three-step process. Just as a course concept is nonlinear, the course outline is non-linear. Though we do begin with the most important communication and language items for the course participants, as determined by the preliminary assessment, we are not restricted to a linear order of what we should cover. The best order to use is the order determined by the course participants' needs and the company's needs.

    C) Lesson and materials development

Lesson and materials development is, of course, guided by the course outline. Lesson and materials development could include any one or more of the following: custom lesson planning as determined by preliminary and ongoing assessment, custom original materials, lessons developed from the course participants' text (course participants' written and spoken language), authentic materials selection, Internet-based materials selection, the teacher's resources, a course book.

    D) Ongoing course assessment and adjustment as needed

A preliminary assessment, or evaluation intake and needs analysis, is not sufficient. And this is why it is so important not to restrict oneself to a linear course outline (traditional book, syllabus, and curriculum following). As a course and training progresses, we learn more about the language needs of course participants and their companies. A language trainer-teacher must be attentive to discovering new things about the course participants' language needs and the company's communication needs. Ongoing course assessment and adjustment is a progressive approach to English language learning and teaching with which traditional academic linear methods of conducting language training courses cannot compete.

Preliminary assessment for English language training and ESL lesson development

    A) Course participant level and skills evaluation: Level evaluation and skills evaluation take the form of interviews or written language assessments. One or both may be necessary, depending on each situation.

    B) Course participant language needs analysis: Language needs analysis means learning about the language that course participants use at work and how we are going to work to improve course participants' communication skills. This analysis is from the viewpoint of course participants.

    C) Management and colleague needs analysis: Management and colleagues play a key role in learning about the language needs of course participants and finding out the areas in which course participants need to improve.
    • This preliminary assessment precedes developing a course concept, a course outline, lesson development, and materials development, which are included in the four components for custom English courses.
